Africa is more than just a destination. It goes far beyond the typical tourist path and leaves a lasting impression. From vibrant traditions, to stunning landscapes and rare wildlife, there is something for every kind of traveller. Here are seven reasons why you should visit Africa – our favourite continent.
Variety
Africa is a vast continent. With over 50 countries, there’s something for everyone. Experiences are different in each region, and you can pick a destination based on what type of adventure you are wanting. Places such as Egypt, Morocco and South Africa are straight forward to plan and explore, for people of all ages. Their tourism industries are already well established, with regular flights, quality accommodation options, and easily accessible attractions. Additionally, locals in the main areas will speak some English, eliminating any communication issues.
Countries like Kenya, Botswana, Tanzania and Namibia are great for those seeking a bit more adventure, with not only a well-trodden tourist path, but also ample opportunity to get off the beaten track. Independent or group travel is common, along with package deals. Facilities are good, flights are regular, and people are welcoming and friendly.
Africa is home to loads of obscure destinations for the curious explorer. Some of these places have a small tourism industry, while others have nothing at all. There’ll be no English and basic facilities, with places of interest outside of the city hard to reach. Travel here requires some planning, and time, but the rewards at the end of your trip will be some of your most memorable.
There’s something for everyone. Africa covers all budgets, all types of adventures, with all experience levels covered, from the beginner to the seasoned explorer.
Wildlife
Africa is home to the world’s largest population of wildlife. The variety of different species is spectacular, with sighting opportunities assured in a number of places. National Parks and reserves are extensive, as are jungles, rivers and lakes. Viewing the wildlife in places like the Kruger Nation Park in South Africa, or Etosha National Park in Namibia can be done on a self-drive trip, which is in-expensive, or you can stay in the park and do a safari, whatever suits you. All budget options are covered.
The Serengeti in Tanzania, and the nearby Masi Mara in Kenya are unforgettable experiences. Visits here are done on a safari, usually from a nearby lodge where you will be staying, catering for the mid-range to high end budget traveller. Staying in a lodge, surrounded by wildlife, and taking a safari are on most people’s bucket lists, and well worth the costs involved.
Trekking to see mountain gorillas in Uganda, Rwanda or the Democratic Republic of the Congo are once in a lifetime experiences. They are all well organised, and professionally run. The costs aren’t for the budget conscious, but remember that the money you pay goes back to protecting the creature that you want to see. Visitor numbers are limited. These are all things you can book and organise before you leave home if you desire.
Gabon has over 80% of the country protected by either National Parks or Reserves. It’s an eco-tourism wonderland, with everything from lowland gorillas to forest elephants. The tourism industry is beginning to emerge, it’s the perfect place for those who are prepared for a little adventure.
Wildlife viewing options in Africa are truly amazing. From safaris to jungle treks, Africa has it all.

Its People
No matter what country or region you visit in Africa, the people will be one of your highlights. We have met some of the friendliest and warmest people during our African adventures. Always smiling, it’s impossible not to be infected with their enthusiasm for life. West African’s will stop you and want to chat, they are as curious of you as you are of them. They are colourful, loud and proud. The local markets are a great place to immerse yourself in the local vibe. Markets are not only where locals shop, it’s where they socialise. They are the heart of the city or village. Talk to the lady selling you fruit, or the elderly woman cooking your lunch, they are lovely people.
People often appear to have nothing, but want to share with you what little they have. They really are resilient. Yes, you will see hungry adults and children, it’s not an easy place to exist. Seeing people in these situations makes you appreciate what you have.
The people of Africa are welcoming, resilient and courageous. A country is its people, and spending time with them not only helps you understand them, but also helps you understand the country.
Adventure
Adventure options are abundant in Africa. There’s an unlimited range of opportunities, from discovering rare animals, to visiting ancient kingdoms. Eastern Africa, from Kenya down to South Africa, are all destinations teeming with animals. This entire area is already an established travelling route, and planning a trip here poses no problems. From solo to group travel, anything is possible.
Egypt and Morocco receive the majority of visitors in the North, for well-known reasons. Tunisia is also easy to visit, with neighbouring Algeria recently emerging as an option for the adventurous.
Senegal, Guinea-Bissau and Sierra Leone in West Africa take a bit more planning, however, West Africa is an amazing region. It’s safe, interesting, and the people are genuinely happy to see you.
Ghana is an English-speaking country, and very stable. Accra makes a great base for ventures into obscure destinations next door, Benin, Togo and Ivory Coast.
Angola is now visa free for many nationalities, and is an adventurer’s dream, with jaw dropping natural wonders that you would never have heard of. Congo and Gabon are home to some of Africa’s most unique and rare wildlife, and well worth the extra planning and visas required to visit.
Africa truly is the ultimate place for travellers seeking a little adventure. It can be as simple or advanced as you wish. Africa has all levels of experience covered.
Islands
Africa includes loads of island nations dotted off its coastline. Some of these are well known, and popular holiday choices for those seeking sun and all-inclusive packages. Mauritius and Cape Verde are such places, but these island nations offer much more than beaches and resorts for those willing to uncover the attractions away from the main areas.
Madagascar is well known for its unusual wildlife, and although getting around the island takes time, the scenery and landscape is like nowhere else. With great flight connections, it’s a destination waiting to be explored.
Nearby Seychelles is a hidden gem, with oceanside villas and spas for the package tourists, and also an interior offering untouched beauty.
Sao Tome and Principe in the Gulf of Guinea is one of our favourite places. A tropical paradise covered in rainforests and tropical fruit, along with some of the world’s finest chocolate and coffee, make these secluded islands hard to leave.
Comoros and Reunion Island are raw destinations, ideal for travellers who enjoy authentic, natural experiences. Don’t expect resorts and five-star accommodation here. You will, however, find everything you need, from lovely guesthouses, local restaurants, and markets flooded with local produce. Friendly and welcoming, they, along with Africa’s other islands, provide all types of experiences, for all types of travellers.

Obscure
When it comes to main stream tourist destinations, much of Africa remains undiscovered. Visitors tend to stick to the main five or six countries, like Morocco, Egypt and South Africa. These places get busy and become over-crowded, which is becoming a problem all over the world.
Avoiding the tour groups and mass crowds is easy in Africa. People go where everyone else goes, and are often afraid of what they don’t know. But travellers are now looking for new experiences, with tourist numbers in previously less visited locations on the increase. There are countries that make no effort to attract tourists, for various reasons, but others are now actively trying to attract people. Angola has now removed the need for a visa, with cruise ships making a stop in Luanda. Kenya and Tanzania have also made entry easier and cheaper. Countries are now also moving to the e-visa, with the application process quick and easy. Tour companies now offer trips to Algeria, Benin and Togo. Congo Brazzaville is also seeing an increase in curious people coming to see the amazing wildlife.
Of the fifty odd countries on the African continent, only a handful are no go at present. That leave’s loads of obscure, emerging and forgotten destinations waiting to be explored, without all the crowds.
Food
Not previously known as a culinary destination, the local cuisines of countries like Senegal and Ghana are now starting to gain some recognition on the global scene. Local dishes throughout Africa are all different and unique. The mis-conception that Africa is all rice and beans is beginning to fade. Trying local delicacies whilst you are on the road is part of travelling, and a lot of fun. The flavours of Africa are like nowhere else. The combinations of spices and herbs are unforgettable. No matter what type of diet you prefer, they’re all catered for.
The street food in Africa is delicious and offers a wonderful opportunity to connect with locals and experience everyday life. The tropical fruit and vegetables that can be found in the local markets year-round are amazing. Most of the produce is organic and home grown, with no sprays or stimulates used. Everything is grown the way it has been for centuries. This means that things are full of flavour and tasty juice. The mangoes, pineapple and papayas are some of the best on the planet, all for a fraction of the cost you’d pay at home.
I will never forget the local peanuts in The Gambia, the cashews in Guinea-Bissau, or the vegetable tajines in Morrocco. The ladies selling fufu in Freetown, Sierra Leone, the giant mangoes in Accra, and the local chocolate and coffee of Sao Tome are some of my favourite memories. Wherever you are in Africa, you will not go hungry.
