Variety

Africa is a vast continent. With over 50 countries, there’s something for everyone. Experiences differ across each region, and you can choose a destination based on the type of adventure you’re seeking.

Places such as Egypt, Morocco and South Africa are straight forward to plan and explore, suitable for travellers of all ages. Their tourism industries are already well established, with regular flights, quality accommodation options, and easily accessible attractions. In most main areas, locals speak some English, helping to avoid communication issues.

Countries like Kenya, Botswana, Tanzania and Namibia are ideal for those wanting a bit more adventure. They offer not only well-trodden tourist paths but also plenty of opportunities to get off the beaten track. Independent or group travel is common, along with package deals. Facilities are good, flights are regular, and people are welcoming and friendly.

Africa is also home to many obscure destinations for the curious explorer. Some have a small tourism industry, while others have none at all. English may not be spoken, and facilities can be very basic, with places of interest outside cities often hard to reach. Travel here requires planning and time, but the rewards are some of the most memorable experiences you’ll ever have.

There truly is something for everyone. Africa covers all budgets and all types of adventures, from the beginner to the seasoned explorer.

Wildlife

Africa is home to the world’s largest population of wildlife. The variety of species is extraordinary, with sighting opportunities assured in a number of places. National parks and reserves are extensive, as are jungles, rivers and lakes.

Viewing the wildlife in places such as Kruger Nation Park in South Africa or Etosha National Park in Namibia can be done on a self-drive trip, which is in-expensive, or you can stay in the park and do a safari – whatever suits you. All budget levels are covered.

The Serengeti in Tanzania, and the nearby Masi Mara in Kenya offer unforgettable experiences. Visits here are done on a safari, usually from a nearby lodge where you will be staying, catering to mid-range and high-end travellers. Staying in a lodge, surrounded by wildlife, and heading out on daily game drives is on most people’s bucket lists – and well worth the cost.

Trekking to see mountain gorillas in Uganda, Rwanda or the Democratic Republic of the Congo is another once in a lifetime experience. These treks are well organised, and professionally run. While not for the budget conscious, the money you pay goes toward protecting these endangered animals, and visitor numbers are limited. Everything can be booked and arranged before you leave home.

Gabon has over 80% of its land protected as national parks or reserves. It’s an eco-tourism wonderland, home to lowland gorillas and forest elephants. With its emerging tourism industry, it’s the perfect destination for those prepared for a little adventure.

Wildlife viewing options in Africa are truly amazing. From safaris to jungle treks, Africa has it all.

Its People

No matter which country or region you visit in Africa, the people will undoubtably be one of your highlights. We’ve met some of the friendliest and warmest people during our African adventures. Always smiling, it’s impossible not to be infected by their enthusiasm for life.

In West Africa, people will often stop you just to chat — they’re as curious about you as you are about them. They’re colourful, loud, and proud. The local markets are a great place to immerse yourself in the local vibe. Markets aren’t only where people shop; they’re where they socialise. They are the heart of every city or village. Talk to the lady selling you fruit, or the elderly woman cooking your lunch — they’re lovely, genuine people.

Many people appear to have little, yet still want to share what they have. They are truly resilient. Yes, you will see hungry adults and children – it’s not an easy place to exist. But witnessing these realities also deepens your appreciation for what you have.

The people of Africa are welcoming, resilient, and courageous. A country is its people, and spending time with them not only helps you understand them, but also helps you understand the country.

Africa truly is the ultimate place for travellers seeking a little adventure.

Adventure

Adventure options are abundant in Africa. There’s an endless range of opportunities, from discovering rare animals to visiting ancient kingdoms. Eastern Africa, from Kenya down to South Africa, is teeming with wildlife. This entire region is already an established travel route, and planning a trip here poses no problems. From solo journeys to group tours, anything is possible.

Egypt and Morocco receive the majority of visitors in the north – and for good reason. Tunisia is also easy to visit, with neighbouring Algeria recently emerging as an option for the more adventurous.

Senegal, Guinea-Bissau and Sierra Leone in West Africa require a little more planning, but the region is incredibly rewarding. It’s safe, fascinating, and the people are genuinely happy to see you.

Ghana is an English-speaking country and very stable country. Accra makes a great base for ventures into nearby, lesser-known destinations such as Benin, Togo, and Ivory Coast.

Angola is now visa free for many nationalities and is an adventurer’s dream, with jaw dropping natural wonders you’ve probably never have heard of. Congo and Gabon are home to some of Africa’s most unique and rare wildlife, and are well worth the extra planning and visa requirements.

Africa truly is the ultimate place for travellers seeking a little adventure. It can be as simple or as challenging as you wish – Africa has all levels of experience covered.

Islands

Africa includes a number of island nations scattered along its coastline. Some are well known and popular holiday choices for those seeking sun and all-inclusive packages. Mauritius and Cape Verde are such places, but these islands offer much more than beaches and resorts for travellers willing to uncover their attractions beyond the main areas.

Madagascar is famous for its unusual wildlife, and although getting around the island takes time, the scenery and landscapes are like nowhere else. With good flight connections, it’s a destination waiting to be explored.

Nearby Seychelles is a hidden gem, offering oceanside villas and spas for the package tourist, as well as an untouched, beautiful interior for those who want to explore further.

Sao Tome and Principe in the Gulf of Guinea, is one of our favourite places. A tropical paradise covered in rainforest and tropical fruit, and home to some of the world’s finest chocolate and coffee, these secluded islands are hard to leave.

Comoros and Reunion Island are raw, authentic destinations – ideal for travellers who enjoy natural, local experiences. Don’t expect resorts and five-star accommodation here. What you will find are lovely guesthouses, local restaurants, and bustling markets overflowing with fresh produce, and friendly locals eager to share their culture.

Friendly and welcoming, Africa’s islands offer a rich variety of experiences for every type of traveller.

Obscure

When it comes to mainstream tourist destinations, much of Africa remains undiscovered. Visitors tend to stick to the main five or six countries, like Morocco, Egypt and South Africa. These places can get busy and over-crowded – a problem increasingly common worldwide.

Avoiding tour groups and mass crowds is easy in Africa. Many people follow the usual paths and are often hesitant to venture into the unknown. But travellers are now seeking new experiences, and tourist numbers in previously less-visited locations are on the rise. Some countries make little effort to attract tourists, for various reasons, while others are actively encouraging visitors. Angola has removed visa requirements, with cruise ships now stopping in Luanda. Kenya and Tanzania have also made entry easier and more affordable. Many countries are moving to e-visa systems, making the application process quick and simple. Tour companies now offer trips to Algeria, Benin, and Togo, and Congo-Brazzaville is seeing more curious travellers eager to witness its incredible wildlife.

Of the roughly fifty countries on the African continent, only a handful are currently off-limits. That leaves plenty of obscure, emerging, and forgotten destinations waiting to be explored – all without the crowds.

Food

Not previously known as a culinary destination, the local cuisines of countries like Senegal and Ghana are now gaining recognition on the global scene. Local dishes throughout Africa are unique and varied. The misconception that Africa is all rice and beans is fading. Trying local delicacies while travelling is part of the adventure — and a lot of fun. The flavours of Africa are like nowhere else, with combinations of spices and herbs that are unforgettable. No matter what type of diet you prefer, there’s something for everyone.

Street food in Africa is delicious and offers a wonderful way to connect with locals and experience everyday life. The tropical fruits and vegetables found in local markets year-round are amazing. Most produce is organic, and home-grown, with no sprays or stimulates used. Everything is grown the way it has been for centuries, resulting in food that’s full of flavour. Mangoes, pineapples, and papayas here are some of the best in the world – and all for a fraction of what you’d pay at home.

I will never forget the local peanuts in The Gambia, the cashews in Guinea-Bissau, or the vegetable tajines in Morocco. The ladies selling fufu in Freetown, Sierra Leone, the giant mangoes in Accra, and the local chocolate and coffee of São Tomé are some of my favourite memories. Wherever you are in Africa, you will not go hungry.
